Please Help with My Blog Design, Webhosting, and URL Questions

I am very interested in moving my wordpress.com blog to its own url.  I am also interested in coming up with a much more attractive blog design.  So, for this week’s Backwards Works for Me Wednesday I have some questions about this.

  1. What is the process to backup and restore my wordpress.com blog to its own url?
  2. How can (or can I) redirect traffic from the wordpress.com blog to the new url to maintain the incoming links and traffic?
  3. If you have your own url, who do you use for your web hosting service? Are you satisfied with the service? Why or why not?
  4. Have you had your site professionally redesigned? If so, who did you use? Were you satisfied? Why or why not?
  5. If you did not have your site professionally designed, did you modify a template and how did you go about designing your own site?
  6. Is it possible to
  7. Do you have any other advice as I (hopefully) embark on this?

Thank you so much for your help in answering my questions!!

1 and 2 can be answered by going to this url http://ralph.fm/2007/02/13/how-to-transfer-wordpress-to-a-new-domain/

    3. I use godaddy and recommend it to all my clients and friends. Its just easy, I have no problems with them and my friends rave about their customer support. I never had to deal with it yet so I can’t attest to that.

4 and 5. I design my own stuff and I have a blog that helps people who want to design their own blog that you might be interested in with a resource guide to other useful stuff on designing blogs.

    7. Figure out what you want your new blog design to do, what message you want it to communicate, and how you want it to feel. You might be able to find a free theme available that you can tweak to your liking.

    Good Luck!

I, too, use godaddy for both my wordpress blogs, and they’ve been great. I also use whipanorbit.com for hosting, and they’re good, too. Cheap.

Once you do it, you’ll know how to do all this from then on. But it is kinda confusing at first. Once you buy a domain name, you then have to buy hosting service (which can be from the same place). From there, I had it transferred over for free using this service: http://install4free.wordpress.net/. They were great.

    Hope this helps!

I use Bluehost and love it. I’ve had several technical issues (of my own making), and they’ve been really great about helping me.

For what it’s worth, I really like the look of your site. It’s clean and easy to read.

    Hi,

You can actually leave it at wordpress and just get your own domain name at godaddy.com for $10, unless you just want to leave wordpress. As for design, I just had mine redone YESTERDAY and it only cost $15! The lady I worked with was amazing, she understood what I wanted and did I mention, it only cost $15 for an awesome header? Seemydesigns is her name. Check out what she did for me and follow the link. She’s my new BFF!

I use GoDaddy for all of my domains, and the service has been very good. They have a one-click WP installation, easy-peasy.
I used charfishdesign.com for my header, Charlie is terrific!

The WP install has an import option that allows you to bring in all of your posts from this blog. I did it a year ago and I love it!

    1. What is the process to backup and restore my wordpress.com blog to its own url?

If you’re using wordpress.org as your blog engine on your own hosting plan, you can actually transfer all your existing posts and comments to your new blog location within the wordpress.com interface.

    3. If you have your own url, who do you use for your web hosting service? Are you satisfied with the service? Why or why not?

I’m another GoDaddy believer. It’s cheap, and has all the functions and services you need for your blog and more.

    5. If you did not have your site professionally designed, did you modify a template and how did you go about designing your own site?

I’m too lazy to design the entire theme so I take a free theme that I like and change the images, text size, colours and others to my liking (of coz still giving credit to the orig designer). It does require a bit of CSS/HTML knowledge.

I really like the simplicity of your current template, so I hope you will choose something similar in your redesign. Best of luck!
