Ingredients:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 egg, beaten
Ingredients for Frosting:
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- food coloring
Directions:
- Combine flour, baking soda, salt, and spices; set aside.
- Blend together shortening and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in molasses and egg.
- Stir in flour mixture just until combined.
- Refrigerate at least overnight.
- Divide dough into 4 portions.
- Roll out each portion to 1/4 inch thickness on a floured surface.
- Flour cookie cutters and cut into desired shapes.
- Arrange on greased baking sheets.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 10 – 12 minutes.
- Let cool on wire racks.
- For frosting, beat all ingredients until fluffy.
- Decorate as desired.
Makes 4 dozen.
