Laundry, Laundry, More Laundry

How do you handle the never ending flow of laundry in your home?  Do you have a system to organize it and make it easier on yourself?  Or, do you just buy new clothes and throw away the dirty ones?

Leave comments below to help me!  I cannot afford all new clothes!

Separate them by the way you wash. I do whites, lights darks and reds. Have baskets or hampers for each one and then it will be easier to throw in a load. When my family was home I had to do 3 loads a day to keep up with the clothes and towels. Sheets etc were another thing. I usually put one in first thing in the morning, and did the others through the day. Usually by evening someone was yelling I did not get what they “had” to wear the next day. By then it was time for them to start doing their own wash. They each had their own hampers and were responsible for their own clothes in High School.

I have 6 children and I do laundry everyday but Sunday. If its not dirty I do not wash it! The kids help put it away.

I feel your pain, and love (and agree wholeheartedly with) your laundry philosophy. In fact, I’m looking forward to the day that I can have laundry facilities in my own home (we’re in a condo with communal facilities now) so that I can do laundry naked just to have EVERYTHING clean all at once…just one time!

Sorry….no tips from me. Just commiseration.

i feel like laundry is never ending! there is always a pile to wash or fold or put away, so it seems in my household! so i try to do a load as often as i can. instead of saving it all for one day. i’ll do a load every day or every other day, depending on how much there is. then i don’t feel so overwhelmed at it all :)

I have also written about this and have my system pictured in this post: http://tinyurl.com/329sl2

I have since refined it and gotten rid of the towel basket by just adding the towels to the basket of the family member they belong to.
Also, the boys are older, so I have 1 bring the dirty whites and darks to the laundry room in the morning and another does it again in the afternoon. The third checks the dryer when he gets home from school and switches clothes from washer to dryer and sorts the dry ones, if needed.
This gives me a little help.
We’re still only folding once a week, though.

I do all the laundry on Monday or I find I never get it done and am doing laundry all day everyday. If it doesn’t make it to the laundry room, it doesn’t get washed. My kids are now old enough to get their clothes downstairs for me. Each has a hamper and on Monday I remind them to take it down. My six year old is learning to sort it into the laundry sorter. It has 3 hanging mesh bags on white pvc pipe frame. I got it at walmart and it has wheels so it is easy to move over to the washer. My four year old can’t really sort yet but she can help carry her dirty clothes down to the basement. I do all 6-8 loads on Monday, hang them on the line, dry the unmentionables and socks in the dryer then my husband and I fold when he gets home from work and I return from my tutoring job. He carries the baskets upstairs and each child is responsible for putting her clothes away. I iron on Tuesday and then everything goes away until next week. I am definitely going to try the mesh bag idea, one for each family member. Thanks for the tip.

My system is quite laughable. But it works for us.
